I have a bored cat. The kind who has a full basket of toys and still chooses, every evening at exactly 7:43pm, to knock my water glass off the desk while making eye contact. I used to think she was being petty. Then I read that indoor cats in small apartments get the equivalent of cabin fever, and the destructive behavior is not spite — it is a smart animal with nothing to do.
So I went looking for something that would actually occupy her. Not a toy she bats once and walks away from. Something she has to work at. The Cat Amazing Mega is the one that worked.
What it actually is
It is a cardboard box. I will be honest about that up front, because the marketing photos make it look like some kind of premium gadget and it is not. It is a sturdy, folded cardboard box with cutouts at three difficulty levels — easy on the outside, harder toward the center, hardest in the middle.
That sounds underwhelming. It is not. The reason it works is that cats are not motivated the way dogs are. A dog will work for food because you asked. A cat will only work for food if the work itself is interesting. The layered cutouts turn eating into a puzzle, and the puzzle is the point. My cat did not care about the kibble. She cared about the fact that the kibble was hidden and she had to fish it out with her paw.
The three levels, and why the levels matter
The outside slots are shallow and wide. A paw swipe grabs the kibble easily. This is where a cat learns the box is not a trap.
The middle layer is narrower and the openings face inward, so the cat has to reach past the cardboard and angle her paw. This took my cat about four sessions to figure out. The first time she tried to stick her whole face in, got frustrated, and walked away. The second time she used her paw. By the fourth, she had a technique.
The center hole is small and deep. This is where I put the high-value stuff — a few freeze-dried treats, not just kibble. She will spend fifteen straight minutes working the center. Fifteen minutes of a cat actually thinking is worth more than two hours of her sleeping on my laptop.
How long it lasts
This is the question everyone asks, so I will answer it directly: the cardboard holds up to about three months of daily use before it looks rough. Mine is going on four months and one corner is soft, but she can still use it. For the price, three to four months of a bored cat becoming a tired cat is a trade I would make again.

Do not fill it and walk away the first time. Put a few pieces of kibble in the outer slots only, and sit with your cat. Tap the box. When she fishes one out, she gets the idea immediately. Move to the middle layer on day two. Do not put anything in the center until she is confidently working the middle — the center is meant to be the challenge she graduates into, not a wall she hits on day one.
I also cut her regular meals slightly when I started, so she was actually hungry at puzzle time. A full cat has no reason to solve a puzzle.
Who it is not for
If your cat is elderly and has arthritis in her paws, the reaching motion can be uncomfortable. For an older cat, a flat lick mat with wet food is kinder.
If your cat is large — a big Maine Coon, a ragdoll — the box is sized for an average cat and she may find it fiddly. Mine is a 9-pound domestic shorthair and it fits her exactly.
If you want something that lasts forever, it will not. It is cardboard. Buy it knowing it is a consumable, like a scratcher, not a heirloom.
The bottom line
The Cat Amazing Mega is not the fanciest cat enrichment toy I own. It is the one my cat uses every single day. It fixed the 7:43pm problem not by punishing the glass-knocking, but by giving her something better to do with her brain. If your indoor cat is bored and acting out, this is where I would tell a friend to start.
