The KONG Classic and the Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl are two of the most-recommended dog toys on the internet, and people keep asking me which one to buy. The honest answer is that the question is wrong — they are not competing products. They solve two different problems, and a lot of dogs need both.
I used both daily for a year with a dog who eats too fast and chews too hard. Here is what each one is actually for, where they overlap, and how to tell which one your dog needs first.
The short version
- Slo Bowl = a bowl that slows down a fast eater. Solves bloat risk and scarf-and-barf.
- KONG Classic = a rubber cone you stuff with food and freeze. Solves boredom chewing and buys you 30 to 45 minutes of occupied dog.
If your dog's main problem is eating too fast, get the Slo Bowl. If your dog's main problem is destroying your things when bored, get the KONG. If you have both problems (I did), get both — they do not duplicate each other.
What the Slo Bowl does that the KONG does not
The Slo Bowl is a slow feeder. It has molded ridges that force the dog to chase each piece of kibble around corners instead of inhaling the whole meal. My dog went from a 35-second meal to a six-minute meal.
This matters for a specific medical reason. Fast-eating, deep-chested dogs are at risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus — bloat — where the stomach fills with swallowed air and twists. The vet's rule of thumb is that a meal lasting over four minutes meaningfully cuts the swallowed air. The Slo Bowl gets my dog to six. The KONG, stuffed and frozen, also slows eating, but it is not shaped to make dry kibble take longer in the same controlled way.
The Slo Bowl also has a rubber base that does not slide. A slow feeder that skids across the floor frustrates the dog into eating faster, which defeats the point. The Slo Bowl stays put.

What the KONG does that the Slo Bowl does not
The KONG is a boredom solution, not a bloat solution. It is a rubber cone you stuff with wet food, peanut butter, or kibble-and-yogurt, and freeze. The dog chews and licks it empty, which takes a heavy chewer 30 to 45 minutes when frozen.
The reason it works is that chewing and licking are calming for dogs — it is the same instinct that makes a stressed dog chew a shoe. Give that instinct a KONG and the dog calms himself down instead of taking it out on your furniture. My dog has not destroyed his KONG in two years, which is more than I can say for anything else he has owned.
The Slo Bowl cannot do this. It dispenses dry kibble fast enough that once the dog has the technique, the meal is over in six minutes and the dog is free to get into trouble. The KONG is the "I need 30 minutes of quiet" tool. The Slo Bowl is the "I need him to not inhale his food" tool.

Where they overlap, and where they do not
Both slow a dog down. Both occupy a dog for a while. People who have only tried one assume they are interchangeable. They are not.
The Slo Bowl only works with dry kibble, and only at mealtime. The KONG works with wet food, dry food, or a mix, and works any time of day — it is not tied to a meal. The Slo Bowl is a bowl; you put it down, the dog eats from it, you pick it up. The KONG is a toy; the dog carries it to his bed and works on it for half an hour.
If your dog is a heavy chewer, the Slo Bowl will eventually get chewed at the edges (mine cracked after three years). The KONG is built specifically to survive chewing — that is its entire purpose. A dog who would shred a Slo Bowl in a week will not shred a KONG.
Which to buy first
If you can only buy one, pick based on your dog's worst problem:
- Eats too fast, throws up, or you are worried about bloat → Slo Bowl first. That is a medical-adjacent problem and the Slo Bowl directly fixes it.
- Destroys things when bored, or you need 30 minutes of quiet to work → KONG first. That is a behavior problem and the KONG directly fixes it.
- Both → get both. They cost roughly the same, they do not overlap, and using both on a rotation covers most of what a bored, fast-eating dog needs.
My honest setup
I use the Slo Bowl for his dry kibble meals to slow down his eating, and I keep two KONGs in the freezer stuffed with wet food for when I need him occupied. They are not competitors — they are two different tools for two different problems, and both have earned their spot in my kitchen.
A note on size
Both come in multiple sizes. The Slo Bowl's "large" is genuinely large but a giant breed may want two for one meal. The KONG comes in sizes from puppy to XXL — get the size for your dog's weight and chewing style, not the size that looks cute. A KONG that is too small for a heavy chewer is a choking risk, not a toy.
The bottom line
If a friend asked me which one to buy and could not tell me their dog's problem, I would ask one question: does the dog eat too fast, or does the dog chew things he should not? Too fast = Slo Bowl. Chewing = KONG. The internet treats them as a rivalry because they are both popular, but they are solving different problems, and a lot of dogs are much happier with both in the house.
